Game of Life – A General Guide

29 Apr

Yes, the life is just a game, whether you realize it or not. And whether we like it or not, we must play along. What, you still don’t believe me? Then allow me to explain the similarity between the game and life, and some general guide.

You live in a world

this is absolute. You can’t live without a world. Or at least, you can hardly live in a harsh world. On the contrary, if you live in better world, things will go easier on you. There’s a time when we live in a harsh world. In this case, we have several options. We can change ourself to adapt to it, or we can change the world itself, or both.

The world without human would be consists of natural aspect, which is already complicated. But human — the intelligent and social being — gave more aspects to the world making it even more complicated. So in this world we have to interact with 3 aspects: natural, artificial, and social aspect. We should keep this in our head while we live in this world, and interacting with these aspects in the good way will surely make things go easier.

You have objective

honestly, what is your purpose in this life? if you don’t have any purpose, your life is worse than video games. at least you have some objective in the game. defeating the final boss, reach the new record, defeat the opponents’s team, anything.

ideally, you should have several primary objectives in your life, and many more secondary objectives. The primary objective is the objective you should achieve in the end of the game and requires you to spend all of your effort on it. So it better be a very big one. In other words, it’s your lifetime project, your masterpiece, your ultimate achievement. Call it whatever you like, you get the point. Otherwise, it’ll be too easy, and where’s the fun of that? On the other hand, secondary objective is other smaller objective you can accomplish during your effort to accomplish your primary objective. The accomplishment of one secondary objective should lead to another new secondary objective, like a never-ending cycle. The accomplishment of secondary objective should bring you 1 step closer to achieve your primary objective, and the accomplishment of many-many-many secondary objectives will make you achieve your primary objective.

You have resources

Well, this is another definite similarity. Resource is something you must spend in order to achieve your objectives. And because you have a very loooooong way ahead, the ability to manage your resources is vital.

I’d say generally, there are 2 types of resources: material and non-material. What is material resource? Easy, anything you can sense with your senses. In this case, money is the easiest example. There are many more example, you decide on your own which one is necessary and which one is not. On the contrary, the non-material resource is the resource you cannot sense with your senses (duh). For this, I’d say there are 2 examples that people often neglect: time and health. The fact is, everybody has the same amount of time: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What makes it different is how we use it. Treat it like a sword: use it properly and it will help you, use it improperly and it will hurt you. Health is a little different, though still connected. With a good health, you have 2 advantages: you can do your role and it may add some extra time. Without good health, it’s hard to do your role and it may decrease your time. So, time and health are still related. Use your time properly to gain good health, and a good health will eventually give you more time.

You have a character

yup, the character is yourself, as the main character in the game of life. And like in many games, the character can gain experience and level up. However, there’s a different. In games, there’s a technique called “farming”. In this “farming” technique, the player do the same thing over and over again (like killing the same monster) to get experience and money. Eventually, the player will level up and get rich. The real world isn’t that simple. In this world, doing the same thing over and over again is called “drill”, and it means building one aspect of the character intensively. Let’s say you’re doing the same thing for 10 years and neglecting other things. The result won’t be “10-years experience”, but it will be “1-year experience for 10 times”. Seriously, the world is complex, and you can’t rely on only 1 variable. Try to learn as many things and skills as possible.

It reminds me on something: “generalist” or “specialist”? Well, there are many pros and cons about either being a specialist or generalist, but in here let me tell you about my own opinion. Every single person actually has both tendency of being generalist and specialist. Either of them isn’t better or worse than the other. It’s just different. So the key is finding a good balance between both of them, and don’t hesitate to change the balance if necessary.

Well, for now, that’s all what I have in my mind about the game of life. Personally, I think this is an interesting topic, and maybe I will try to write about this topic later, if I can spare some of my time for it of course. I hope you like it and find it useful.
